Happy Mother’s Day

Mrs. Herbert Stevens (Hybrid Tea), 1910

MOTHERS

from darkness
came the light
we call children

we talk the talk
we walk the walk
we dance the dance
loving in circles

we look at love
with candid eyes
in fields where
wisdom blossoms with the seasons
our songs lusty veins

not a word slithered
from our tongues
unmeasured
unweighed
unaccounted for

we slip     slide
bend    skip   stretch
to the beat of evolution
we rest to draw from the well
but we dare not fall

we are the music
strumming violins
sweet    sweet    slow jazz
beating with crapulent fury
blood and wine
we are the untoasted
movers and shakers

we are
the flow
the swell
lapping against time
the builders of lives
the givers of wings
we’re confident
we’re not conceited

wherever we are from
whatever we are called
we are mother
mama    ma    mom    mommy
woman

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
